Free lula / Lula livre campaign
The Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee -New York (DDB-NY)- has been involved in fighting against the injustices towards Former Brazilian President Lula da Silva since before the launch of the campaign #StandwithLula in New York, in September 2017, with ITCU and his defense lawyers, Cristiano Zanin, Valeska Teixeira Martins and Geoffrey Robertson QC.
Lula, as he is known worldwide, has been a victim of Lawfare, or the violent persecution through the law, abusing media power to defame the former President, without any evidence of wrongdoing.
Even though Lula was finally set free to await the final trial, as the Brazilian Constitution mandates, he is still charged with dozens of accusations, all of which have not yet been proven. No sufficient evidence has been presented by the prosecutors. For more information please read the posts below.
On April 7, 2018, Lula was imprisoned and convicted to spend 12 years in jail, on a sentence of “Undetermined acts”. DDB-NY is committed to bringing awareness about the case and his imprisonment of a political nature, and to defending his legacy of promoting profound change in Brazilian Society. Among many of the changes, Lula, a former union leader and founder of the Workers Party, carried out a government program from 2003 to 2010 that helped lift 40 million people out of extreme poverty in Brazil.
On April 6, 2019, DDB-NY helped launch the Free Lula Committee USA in New York, at The People’s Forum event “Lula Livre: the fight to free Lula and regain democracy in Brazil”, to help expand the international campaign to free Lula.
More information about the current campaign will be shared here and in our News section. You can also read the Committee’s Manifesto launched on April 6, 2019, at : freelula.us
